Judith A. Clapp (1930) is een computerwetenschapper die haar carrière begon bij het Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) en vervolgde bij het Lincoln Laboratory en MITRE, waar ze een leider was in een militair project (Semi-Automatic Ground Environment - SAGE), inclusief de ontwikkeling van de SAGE-computer.[1]
Opleiding[bewerken]
Clapp werd geboren in 1930 en groeide op in Long Island, New York. Ze behaalde haar bachelordiploma in wiskunde en fysica in 1951 aan het Smith College en haar masterdiploma in toegepaste wetenschappen (die ze omschreef als de toenmalige computerwetenschappen) in 1952 aan Radcliffe College, destijds een vrouwencollege en later officieel deel van Harvard University.[1][2]
Carrière[bewerken]
Nadat ze afstudeerde aan Radcliffe begon Clapp te werken bij MIT, de enige vrouw onder de vroege programmeurs van de Whirlwind I, de eerste real-time computer. De Whirlwind, een vacuümbuiscomputer, werd oorspronkelijk in opdracht van de Amerikaanse marine gebouwd, maar werd vervolgens door de luchtmacht gefinancierd voor het Semi-Automatic Ground Environment (SAGE)-project. Clapp bleef aan het project werken na de overdracht ervan naar het Lincoln Laboratory en later naar de MITRE Corporation, en werd uiteindelijk Senior Principal Software Systems Engineer bij MITRE. Na het SAGE-project bleef Clapp in het management werken bij MITRE en nam zij deel aan de werkgroep van het Amerikaanse Ministerie van Defensie. De werkgroep leidde finaal tot de ontwikkeling van de programmeertaal Ada.[1][2][3]
Verwezenlijkingen[bewerken]
Het werk van Clapp wordt beschouwd als een belangrijke basis voor software-engineering als discipline. Ze was betrokken bij vroege professionele organisaties voor vrouwen in de computerwereld en wordt erkend als een pionier onder vrouwen in het veld.[4] Clapp ontving in 2001 een Achievement Award van de Society of Women Engineers.[2] In 2005 ontving ze de Smith College-medaille.[5] Haar werk en visie over het werken aan het SAGE-project werden ook besproken in het boek "Recoding Gender: Women's Changing Participation in Computing".[6]
